Leading a team of over 25, producing innovative solutions for high-rise developments and complex structural designs. Since joining in June 2005, the team expanded to over 55 staff by Jan 2007. Major tasks were: 

  • Setting up a management system for workload, reviews & resources in the department
  • Identify staff to fill in key roles in the technical and managerial positions
  • Employ new staff to fill in the technical and managerial key positions
  • Setting up a technical training programme for the department
  • Mentor and train key staff for succession of the department and their future roles
  • Increase the self confidence and sense of pride in the work produced in the staff
  • Help to promote the department internal and external to the company
  • Work with the company management to harmonise interaction with other disciplines

Major Projects in this period were:

  • A number of towers in Jumeirah Lake Towers including Al Mas tower and 8 other towers,

When I left, I helped to put in place the succession and make the new management team, which basically consisted of a few long standing staff in the department, confident and supported for their new challenges. Key staff included Mr Chander Puri, Mr Bob Scott, Mr Ranjith Chandunni and Dr Min-Hah Chun. The hand over was smooth, and staff moral and confidence in the new management system were strengthened by my involvement. 

 

Other activities:

 

Representing Atkins in Pakistan in two trips having press and TV interviews after the earthquake in 2005 to provide assurances to the public that high  rise buildings designed to international codes are safe. Publishing information on earthquake design to be understood by general public for the Pakistani company who has sponsored the trips.

 

Coordinator for the Part 3 Exam interviews in UAE on behalf of the Institution of Structural Engineers of UK.

Project Manager for the Category 3 Check of a new box culvert at Junction 15A on the M1 Motorway Designed by Halcrow constructed by Edmund Nuttall in collaboration with John Ropkins. The design comprises jacking the completed box culvert with a cross sectional dimension of 8x14m with a length of 45m using a force of the order of 4500 tonnes. The Category 3 Check was later extended to include the Jacking Shield and all the temporary works.

Design of the 30000 tonne Ship Impact on the upstream of Surrey Pier of Hungerford Millennium Bridge in London. (2001-2002)

Independent internal review of the dynamic analyses of a wire rope safety fence which has been carried out using explicit dynamic solvers to predict behaviour in advance of full scale testing. (1999)

Project Manager for assessment and monitoring of M1/M6 Catthorpe Interchange Bridge including assessment, special inspection of damaged hinges, design of a remote monitoring system, ongoing monitoring and assistance to provide input in the research work required to establish behaviour of critical hinges in the bridge. Project Manager for the Puttesund Bridge in Norway, a 140m balanced cantilever construction suffering from excess deflection and shear deficiency including determination of in situ concrete stresses, design of a monitoring system during the lifting of the bridge, check of the design of the strengthening system to convert the bridge to a cable stay bridge. Design of the remote monitoring of the Somerset House to determine the rate and level of ongoing settlement and cracking in the structure. (2000-2002)

Design Check Engineer for the Canons Park, Stanmore Bridge carrying London Underground (LUL) including abutment stabilisation system, strengthening piles and abutment, replacement bearings and assistance in site supervision during lifting the bridge and replacement of the bearings. (1999)

Project Manager and Engineer for the dynamic analysis of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in Newcastle to determine the loads and accelerations on the structural components during the opening and closing of this 110m span lifting footbridge. (1999-2001)

Project Manager for the inspection and assessment of 14 bridges on M20, Junctions 3 to 5, for Kent County Council including Special Inspection of 8 post-tensioned bridges (1998-1999).

Reviewer, Auditor, Advisor and Technical and Approval Authority for the rail overbridges (Bridge Guard 3) for Rail Track for half of England and Wales.

Project Manager for the Battersea Yard Bridge, working with Rail First and Railtrack to infill the existing bridge (1998-1999).

Acting as TAA for Railtrack assessment works conducted by a number of consultants and joint ventures in the UK since 1998. Advisor and reviewer on the Guidelines for the Supplementary Load Testing of Bridges published by Thomas Telford for the Institution of Civil Engineers National Steering Committee for the Load Testing of Bridges, 1998.

In situ load testing of the Dee Crossing (cable-stayed) to compare against theoretical behaviour and provide design guidelines as part of a Link Monitoring Project (1998).

Assessment of Earthquake vulnerability of MOD married quarters in Cyprus for strengthening and dynamic testing in order to determine the actual performance of a masonry and precast concrete panel buildings. (1997)

In situ stress determination of a number of bridges in the UK by training Messrs Sandberg in the use of his technique. The structures that have been jointly tested include A3 Tolworth Junction Bridges, Piper Building London, Soar River Bridge, Clifton Bridge and Huntingdon Viaduct.

Lead assessor for the BD21/93 assessment of a number of bridges for Railtrack in Kent, Wandsworth and Bromley. Responsible for the assessment and strengthening of over 30 bridges to BD21/84, BD 21/93, DB37/88 and BD44/90 such as Chieveley Interchange Bridges at Junction 13 of the M4 motorway, Catthorpe Interchange at Junction 19 between the M1/M6 motorways, bridges on M54 motorway, M20 between junctions 3 to 5 and Queenhill Viaduct Category Check for Howard Humphries.

Design of longitudinal beams of 100-span Kwai Chung Viaduct in Hong Kong: multi-stage construction, pre and post-tensioned with precast and in situ concrete elements. Responsible for strengthening of all bridges on the M25 motorway between Junctions 8 and 10: a Design and Build contract with Balfour Beatty.

Considerable experience in static and dynamic analyses using Finite Element programs such as LUSAS (for structures) and CRISP (for soil structure interaction). A major dynamic analysis of a proposed cable-stayed bridge in Hong Kong was performed in 1994. Soil-structure interaction of foundation of Second Severn Bridge and the Severn Tunnel, and the effect of embankment construction on the high voltage buried cables at the Dee Crossing (cable-stayed) were investigated using CRISP program.

Project Manager and Engineer for load testing or in situ stress measurement of more than 20 bridges, such as the Medway Bridge on M2, Sorsund Bridge (Norway), New Haw Viaduct on M25, Kingston Bridge in Glasgow, A3/A31 Flyover Guildford, Cavendish Bridge (A6) and Blackburn Road Viaduct at Junction 34 M1 North for TRL. Blackburn Road Viaduct was later demolished.

Involved in the Special Inspection of post-tensioned concrete bridges from originating the BA 50/93 to its use on bridges such as New Haw Viaduct, Morants Court Bridge on the M25 and eight bridges in Northern Ireland.

Engineer for the assessment of two post-tensioned bridges on the M20 motorway. Performing non-linear and dynamic finite element analysis of a wide variety of concrete and steel structures such as crash barrier analysis for Conder using LUSAS and NISA finite element package programs.

Project Manager and Engineer for load testing or in situ stress measurements of more than six bridges such as the 30-span Langstone-Hayling Island Viaduct and the 10-span Angel Road Railway Bridge, A406. In addition, involved with the in situ stress measurement of more than six other bridges including the Tanagro III Bridge in southern Italy. Involved with the demolition of Ashchurch Water Tower and part demolition and reinstatement of post-tensioning for Hatfield Hyperbolic paraboloid concrete roof.

Project Engineer for the assessment of a 21 span ASR affected bridge carrying the M1 motorway close to the River Trent subject to Category 3 check. Involved with the assessment and responsible for the strengthening and repair works on the Rothersthorpe Bridge which carries the M1 motorway over the A43, Blisworth by-pass.Research and development team involved in the assessment, repair and monitoring of structures. Member of a team for the assessment of in situ stresses in a prestressed water tower at Ashchurch, Army Vehicle Depot.
